History

Year	Details
1977	Opened 16 July. Gibson and Pokorny, Architects. Branch created in partnership with the Native Canadian Centre, who owned the buildings at 10 and 16 Spadina Road, to serve the local community and house a special collection to serve the Native Canadian community. The building has the name written in Cree syllabics and roman orthography on the front of the building, Mahsinahhekahnikahmik, meaning “the lodge or place of the book”.
1980	Building at 10 Spadina Road purchased by Toronto Public Library.
1992	Closed for building renovation and HVAC retrofit, 13 July. Reopened 14 October.
2007	New hours, 8 January. Hours open per week decreased from 42 to 40.
2013	Closed for state of good repair renovation, including front entrance improvements, new carpet, shelving and furniture, 15 November.
2014	Reopened 18 February.

Spadina Road is on Indigenous land. This is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee (ho-den-oh-sho-nee) Confederacy (aka. the Six Nations Confederacy), the Wendat, and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Toronto Public Library gratefully acknowledges these Indigenous nations for their guardianship of this land. We'd also like to remind and reaffirm, as Torontonians and Canadians, our accountability to these Indigenous nations, and to all Indigenous peoples and communities living in Toronto.

This land is also part of the Dish with One Spoon territory, a treaty between the Haudenosaunee Confederacy (aka. The Six Nations Confederacy), the Anishinaabek (Ah-nish-nah-bek) and allied nations, to peaceably share and care for this land, its waters, and all of the biodiversity in the Great Lakes region.
