Year	Details
1911	Municipal Reference Library opened 11 September. Located in City Hall, Queen Street West, northeast corner of Bay Street.
1928	Municipal Reference Branch closed at Toronto City Hall. Downtown Branch opened 23 January. Located in rented premises, 42 Adelaide Street West, near Yonge Street. Collections transferred from Church Street Library and Municipal Reference Library.
1947	Downtown Branch closed.
1952	Downtown Branch reopened July 7 in rented premises in the old Bank of Nova Scotia, 39 King Street West, near Bay Street.
1956	Downtown Branch relocated to rented premises at 25 Richmond Street West, near Bay Street.
1965	Downtown Branch closed, 3 September. City Hall Branch opened 14 September in Toronto's new City Hall. Architects Viljo Revell & John B. Parkin Associates. Collections formed from Downtown Branch and Business Reference Department (Hallam Room). Included a new Municipal Reference Department on the mezzanine.
1966	Metropolitan Toronto Library Board formed; Business Reference and Municipal Reference collection transferred to it.
1976	City Hall listed on Toronto Historical Board's Inventory of Heritage Properties, adopted by City Council, August 18.
1987	Retrofitted by Joseph Bogdan, Architects. Branch closed 16 April.
1988	Reopened 29 February.
1992	Municipal Reference Department transferred to New Metro Hall 1 July.
1995	Hours reduced 23 October from 47.5 to 25 hours per week. Closed for renovation 22 December.
1996	Reopened 17 June. Space reduced from 11,000 to 5,074 sq. ft. Collections, hours and staff also reduced.
2007	Hours open per week increased on 8 January from 25 to 40.

City Hall is on Indigenous land. This is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee (ho-den-oh-sho-nee) Confederacy (aka. the Six Nations Confederacy), the Wendat, and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Toronto Public Library gratefully acknowledges these Indigenous nations for their guardianship of this land. We'd also like to remind and reaffirm, as Torontonians and Canadians, our accountability to these Indigenous nations, and to all Indigenous peoples and communities living in Toronto.

This land is also part of the Dish with One Spoon territory, a treaty between the Haudenosaunee Confederacy (aka. The Six Nations Confederacy), the Anishinaabek (Ah-nish-nah-bek) and allied nations, to peaceably share and care for this land, its waters, and all of the biodiversity in the Great Lakes region.
