Nature's wrath: Shattered buildings in Barrie resemble a war zone after yesterday's tornado that killed at least seven in that city. The twister tore through a new subdivision; flattening at least 100 houses in 15 minutes. It first touched down at the Barne racetrack; just east of Highway 400; where it destroyed the horse barns. The storm reduced factories and a warehouse to shreds before roa east over Lake Simcoe. [Incomplete]

Almost like before: George; Burton of Springhome Rd. in Barrie; above; can smile today because he's got a new roof on his home and his wife's hand; seriously cut by flying glass during the tornado; is healing. He's shown on the roof of his house; in almost the same spot his son; Bill; was kneeling when the photo at right was taken just a couple of hours after the tornado struck. The street is cleaned up now and many of the damaged houses have been repaired and the overturned cars and debis are gone. But so are most of the young trees and flowers that had dressed up this subdivision.

Signs of the times: Barrie residents may have lost their homes and even some loved ones; but many haven't lost their sense of humor. Despite the tragic series of events; when a tornado devastated the Barrie area 10 days ago; the residents of these homes used some innovative and descriptive signs in their brave attempts to lift a bit of the gloom. One homeowner tells passersby he is Gone for the Summer; another has cancelled the pool party; and still another; with an artful taste for gallows humor; proclaims that We may appear dead; but the body's still warm.
