A year ago today a tornado swept through Barrie; top; causing devastating damage.

Almost like before: George; Burton of Springhome Rd. in Barrie; above; can smile today because he's got a new roof on his home and his wife's hand; seriously cut by flying glass during the tornado; is healing. He's shown on the roof of his house; in almost the same spot his son; Bill; was kneeling when the photo at right was taken just a couple of hours after the tornado struck. The street is cleaned up now and many of the damaged houses have been repaired and the overturned cars and debis are gone. But so are most of the young trees and flowers that had dressed up this subdivision.

Chain gang: Prisoners from Mimico Correctional Centre pitch in to clear away the debris of a home in Barrie demolished by the recent tornado. One of the 30 on the work detail said they volunteered because we wanted to do out part to help. All are short-term prisoners convicted of non-violent offences; and tornado victims say the convicts are doing a terrific job for them.

Disbelleving look: Margaret and George Telford; 71 and 75; survey the remains of their Murray St. bungalow in Barrie yesterday. They escaped serious injury by crouching between two walls of the house when the tornado roared through the city. Margaret said the home meant everything to us.

House Insured: John and Marion Bayfield of Barrie wait for an insurance adjuster to appraise the damage Friday's tornado did to their $200;000 home. The Bayfields and their two small sons have found temporary accommodation and say the earliest they'll be able to move into a rebuilt home is Christmas. They hope to recoup most of their losses from their insurance company.

Nature's wrath: Shattered buildings in Barrie resemble a war zone after yesterday's tornado that killed at least seven in that city. The twister tore through a new subdivision; flattening at least 100 houses in 15 minutes. It first touched down at the Barne racetrack; just east of Highway 400; where it destroyed the horse barns. The storm reduced factories and a warehouse to shreds before roa east over Lake Simcoe. [Incomplete]
