A straphanger is the new chairman of the Toronto Transit Commission: Gordon Hurlburt: a former North York controller: who usualy drives his car to the Finch subway terminal and then takes the subway five stops to the TTC offices at Davisville.

It's a blast. No; it's not a character dropped on to Queen's Quay from an old science fiction movie; it's George gill of Torno Engineering sprucing up a section of the Harbourfront Rapid Transit Line. the suit and mask with breathing filter can get warm; but protects Gill as he sprays fine sand under high pressure at the concrete portal where the underground Bay St. line emerges to Queen's Quay. The blasting removes markings and blobs of cement.

High-tec bus: A TTC bus driver demonstrates the computer terminal that keeps him in touch with the control centre. As the bus rolls along; sensors count the rotations of the wheels; giving inspectors an exact location. They can then advise drivers on whether to slow down or speed up.

It will take the contractor three months to transform this littered area into a parking lot - and the contract has not even been awarded yet.
