Degrading and inhuman were two of the descriptions used to describe the Andrew Mercer Reformatory for Women on King near Dufferin St. Wreckers are tearing the place down and it's costing more to raze it than it did to build it. Aside from the regular cells shown here there were windowless dungeon cells. The residents of Mercer were transferred to Brampton's Vanier Centre on April 3.

Dentention cells in the basement of Mercer Reformatory are toured by government officials and members of the press. These are five-by-seven windowless cubicles with painted brick walls furnished only with iron beds and chamber pots. In foreground is lounge with television set.

Lots of muscle: An inmate at Guelph Correctional Centre shows off the strength he uses to pry apart jaws of steer skulls at work at Better Beef Ltd., a private packing firm operating on the grounds of the reformatory. The inmate is one of 48 inmates who work each day with 120 civilian employees at the abattoir. He earns $350 a week for his labors.
