Degrading and inhuman were two of the descriptions used to describe the Andrew Mercer Reformatory for Women on King near Dufferin St. Wreckers are tearing the place down and it's costing more to raze it than it did to build it. Aside from the regular cells shown here there were windowless dungeon cells. The residents of Mercer were transferred to Brampton's Vanier Centre on April 3.

Several thousand dollars damage was done inclduing broken windows; in riot that started with sit-down strike. Girls tried to break down door to freedom; charged prisoners had received harsh treatment.

Stark; cramped cell is all too typical of the living quarters provided for inmates at Mercer Reformatory in Toronto. They are no larger than the stalls for horses at the CNE. Many are without windows and the girls try to brighten them up by putting small pictures on the walls.

Toronto's housing task force, under Alderman Michael Goldrick, is expected to recommend the banking for new homes of under-used or badly used land, such as the site of the old Mercer Reformatory, above. Report is expected to be presented later this month for council debate.
