History

Year	Details
1955	Golden Mile Branch is opened at 29 Civic Road by the Township of Scarborough Public Library Board in December; the branch is formally opened in January 1956 by Angus Mowat, the Ontario Provincial Library Inspector. The library was housed in a 14- x 22-foot room that during the Second World War had been part of a fuse-filling munitions factory known as GECO (General Engineering Company). The Library's reserve, overdue and bookmobile departments also were housed at 29 Civic Road.
1965	Relocated to the Eglinton Square shopping centre, southeast corner of Eglinton Avenue East and Victoria Park Avenue, end of March. The branch reopens for service on 1 April and is officially reopened by Scarborough Reeve Albert Campbell on 13 April.
1971	The branch name is changed (but not its location) to Eglinton Square Branch, "in keeping with its location at 50 Eglinton Square, at Victoria Park Avenue". (“Name Change,” Scarborough News, 25 February 1971.)
1983	Relocated to its present location in a new wing of the mall, officially reopened on 18 April.
2007	New hours, 8 January. Hours open per week increased from 57 to 58.5.
2015	Open hours per week increased from 58.5 to 62, 8 September.
2016	Closed for renovation and expansion, 25 June.
2017	Reopened after renovation and expansion, 23 June.
	Golden Mile/Eglinton Square Then and Now

Eglinton Square is on Indigenous land. This is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee (ho-den-oh-sho-nee) Confederacy (aka. the Six Nations Confederacy), the Wendat, and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Toronto Public Library gratefully acknowledges these Indigenous nations for their guardianship of this land. We'd also like to remind and reaffirm, as Torontonians and Canadians, our accountability to these Indigenous nations, and to all Indigenous peoples and communities living in Toronto.

This land is also part of the Dish with One Spoon territory, a treaty between the Haudenosaunee Confederacy (aka. The Six Nations Confederacy), the Anishinaabek (Ah-nish-nah-bek) and allied nations, to peaceably share and care for this land, its waters, and all of the biodiversity in the Great Lakes region.
