Elena Ferrante follows the friendship of Elena and Lila through Italy's tumultuous post-war period across all four of The Neapolitan Novels; but this talk focuses mainly on the third, Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, which depicts the violent labour struggles taking shape in Southern Italy. While women's labour has been historically devalued in Italian culture, Ferrante wants readers to see the relationship between women's labour (emotional, household, reproductive and so on) and the labour struggles in the factory. Lovers of these outstanding novels will gain a deeper sense of the books' engagement with Italy's labour history and feminist political struggle.
