Caption:

Workers at the Dominion Bridge Co. Ltd. steel fabrication plant inspect the top cone for the Number 1 blast furnace now under construction at the Steel Co. of Canada's massive Nanticoke project on the north shore of Lake Erie. The $1.25 billion project is scheduled to come on stream in early 1980 and will provide 1.3 million tons of slab steel annually. A mixture of iron ore, coke and flux pours through top cone into furnace, where it is super-heated into molton iron. The total cost of the Nanticoke complex has more than doubled since it was announced in late 1973.
