(bound in Scadding, Henry, Toronto of old, Toronto, 1878, 971.354.S17.11 copy 3). Howard's diary (Ms collection, Howard, J. G., Papers, section II, vol. VI) states on 10 February 1846 "to Mr Scobie about he Lithographing the views of the Asylum", and on 28 September 1846 "Mr Ewart & Johnstone came about lithographing the perspective view of the Asylum", and on 11 January 1847 "at perspective view of Asylum on wood till 1/2 1/2 past 2 then took Do to show the Engraver also ground Plan & description". A wood engraving ("J.G. HOWARD. ARCT. / F.C. LOWE. SC") of this subject appears as the frontispiece to William H. Smith, Smith's Canadian gazetteer, Toronto, 1846 (but a map in the book is dated 1847). The lithograph was issued as a plate to The Canadian Gem and Family Visitor, Toronto, February 1849 (vol. 2, no.2) whIch states on p. 54: These engravings are executed upon stone, at the establishment of Messrs. Scobie and Balfour of this city, and they serve to illustrate that improvement which is taking place in Canadian art [The other "engraving" is Acc. B 8-60f].
