Notes

'British Colonist', Toronto, 3 December 1850: ... We have been favoured by Mr. Hamel with a copy of his lithographic portrait of ... Robert Baldwin ... taken from Mr. Hamel's celebrated painting ...
Another impression (Acc. E 1-45g) has the coat of arms printed in black on the wove papaer rather than in gold on the India paper; some of the border is also printed in black. The sheet has been trimmed to or within the border and the piece bearing the b. inscription has been separated: sheet 344 x 260 mm. & 65 x 266 mm.
Catalogued June 1985
Inscribed on the stone, l.l.: Painted by Theople Hamel.: l.c.: The Honourable Robt Baldwin; b.: Robert Baldwin / of Spadina in the County of York, Upper Canada. / Her Majesty's Attorney General for Upper Canda, and P.M. for the / North Riding of the County of York in the Parliament of Canada.
Perhaps lithographed by Francis D'Avignon and printed by Nagel & Weingaertner, N.Y. (cf. Acc. 268).
Probably after the painting former owned by R.W.Y. Baldwin; Acc. JRR 461 is a photograph, col. with w.c., of a detail of the painting, and it is probably the painting reproduced in J.E. Middleton, 'The Municipality of Toronto', I opp. p. 241.
