Notes

Inscribed on the stone, l.c.: Madeley, lith. 3. Wellington St. Strand. Lieutenant-General William Thornton (1763-1841) was M.P. for Woodstock, England, 1812-13, 1814-18. The JRR Catalogue mistakenly identifies the sitter as Lieutenant-General Sir William Thornton (1779?-1840), military secretary and aide-de-camp to Sir James Henry Craig, governor-in-chief of Canada. Cf. O'Donoghue 1, a mezzotint, 1818, after Mme Varillat. JRR(1912) 169. NOV 19 1986
