Jenn Shapland: My Autobiography of Carson McCullers

EVT446878

Wed Jun 17, 2020
7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
60 mins

"To tell her own story," author Jenn Shapland informs us early on in this moving and insightful memoir, "a writer must make herself a character." This seemingly simple-place observation continuously unfolds in complex ways throughout Shapland's book, My Autobiography of Carson McCullers. Shapland immersed herself in a cache of author Carson McCullers' archives-love letters, therapy transcripts, journal entries-and in doing so shows us the hidden lives that Queer people were forced to navigate or deny.

Shapland talks about her book, which is a memoir, a mediation, an exploration of identity and how stories of Queer lives have long been masked, misrepresented or silenced.

This event is part of our Live & Online series and is the virtual version of our Appel Salon.
