The Automatistes were Canada's first truly avant garde artists. From their beginnings in the early 1940s they were interdisciplinary (painting, dance, poetry) and their members both men and women. This talk examines the importance of the Automatistes' stylistic innovations within Canadian art and, internationally in relation to Lyrical Abstraction in Paris and Abstract Expressionism in New York.

Speaker: Roald Nasgaard, former chair of the Department of Art, Florida State University, former Chief Curator, Art Gallery of Ontario and Officer of the Order of Canada.
