This lecture discusses key American Abstract Expressionist artists, such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman in relation to European pre-war abstraction. It will also explain their technical innovations, challenges abstraction poses to the viewer as well as the political appropriation of this art form as a vehicle of cultural propaganda.
