John Irving is one of the most creative and beloved in America. Nominated for a National Book Award three times and winning for his novel The World According to Garp which was published in 1978. Irving takes to the stage to discuss the 40th anniversary of the publication of the book which established him as one of the most imaginative writers of his generation.

Hosted by the former New York Times Books editor, Sam Tanenhaus.

Please note John Irving will only sign copies of the new edition of The World According to Garp.


Ticket Holders: Limit two tickets per valid email address. Doors open at 6 pm. Please join us for a cash bar reception starting at 6 pm. As most Appel Salon events are free, it is our policy to overbook. In case of a full program, your ticket reservation may not guarantee admission. We recommend you arrive early.

Room Capacity: Based on fire code regulations the Appel Salon can accommodate seating for 458 in the main room. Seating is on a first come, first served basis. Additional overflow seating as well as standing room is available in the adjoining room.


The celebration will continue on Dec 5 with a film screening of The World According to Garp at our Riverdale branch.
