History

Year	Details
1948	York Township Public Library Board, established in 1945, opens the first bookmobile in the Toronto area; the weekly stop at Jane and Pritchard becomes one of the busiest. Lots, 10, 11, 12 and 13 of Plan 1417 on the west side of Jane Street, south of Dundas Street, are purchased from York Township for $2,000. Council approves building a branch library here, another branch in Mount Dennis and a main library at Eglinton and Northcliffe.
1949	Albert E. Vine, Architect of 182 Humewood Drive, is commissioned to prepare a plan for the two branch libraries and another for the main library.
1950	Cornerstone is laid for the new branch library at 610 Jane Street, 5 November.
1951	Jane Street Branch opened at 610 Jane Street by the York Public Library Board, 13 November.
1967	Branch becomes part of the Borough of York Public Library Board, when the Town of Weston and the Township of York are amalgamated as the Borough of York, 1 January.
1970	New Boy's and Girl's Room opens in the basement, January.
1971	Hours of service extended with the branch opening on Wednesdays. Branch use declines dramatically during 1971-2 when the Jane Street subway is constructed under the railway tracks between Dundas Street West and St. Clair Avenue West.
1972	Abram, Nowkski & McLaughlin, Associates are appointed architects of the new Jane Street Branch, March.
1973	Present site at the southwest corner of Jane and Dundas is acquired from the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto.
1974	Jane Street Branch is closed, with book stock and equipment moved to the new building, December.
1975	New library opens in the current location, 12 January. York Public Library's Technical Services and Mobile Library Services relocate to the old Jane Street Branch.
1976	Toy library located here, with initial funding from Etobicoke Runnymede Lions Club.
1981	Hours reduced with Monday closings.
1998	City of York Public Library Board becomes part of Toronto Public Library, with the amalgamation of the city of Toronto, 1 January.
2003	Toronto City Council approves conversion of the unused library building at 610 Jane Street, which was declared surplus after amalgamation, into a child care centre, June.
2006	Closed for renovation, 23 September. Teeple Architects, Inc.
2008	Reopened, 4 February. Hours open per week decreased from 51.5 to 50.5. Jane/Dundas Branch history panel (PDF).
2009	Hours open increased to 58.5 as of 5 January, 2009.
2024	Board approved renaming of branch to Daniel G. Hill on June 24.

Daniel G. Hill is on Indigenous land and uniquely situated along Gabekanaang-ziibi (ka-be-ka-naang zee-bih), the Anishinaabemowin (Ah-nish-nah-be-mo-win) name for the Humber River, which means “Leave the canoes and go back.” This waterway provides an integral connection between Indigenous communities on the shore of Lake Ontario, Lake Simcoe, and the Georgian Bay region. The Anishinaabemowin (Ah-nish-nah-be-mo-win) name for this area is Adobigok (ah-doh-bih-gok), which means the Place of the Alders.

This is the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee (ho-den-oh-sho-nee) Confederacy (aka. Six Nations Confederacy), the Wendat, and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. Toronto Public Library gratefully acknowledges these Indigenous nations for their guardianship of this land. We'd also like to remind and reaffirm, as Torontonians and Canadians, our accountability to these Indigenous nations, and to all Indigenous peoples and communities living in Toronto.

This land is also part of the Dish with One Spoon territory, a treaty between the Haudenosaunee Confederacy (aka. The Six Nations Confederacy), the Anishinaabek (Ah-nish-nah-bek) and allied nations, to peaceably share and care for this land, its waters, and all of the biodiversity in the Great Lakes region.
