War Stories: Toronto and the War of 1812-14 — The Military
After President James Madison declared war on Great Britain on June 18, 1812, the British Army in Upper Canada swiftly took the initiative, taking Fort Michilimakinac even before the Americans posted there knew they were at war, making this the most significant western engagement of the war. While the Great Lakes and communities that bordered the lakes were the focus of most of the battles that occurred during the war, important battles were waged elsewhere: in Lower Canada at Chateauguay and on sea with naval battles such as the one between the H.M.S. Shannon and the U.S.S. Chesapeake.
