Fine and Applied Arts

The collection specializes in the history of Western art, with emphasis on material from the 19th and 20th centuries. It also includes other historical and international material. Coverage includes:

  • General art history, comics and caricature, drawing, engraving and etching, painting and sculpture
  • Architecture, decorative arts, graphic design, photography, fashion and costume.

The collection is also strong in Canadian material including auction and exhibition catalogues, as well as the following:

  • The Canadian Art Files (Associations, Exhibitions, Galleries)
  • The Canadian Artists Files
  • The Canadian Artists Index

The above provide unique sources of information on the Canadian art scene and Canadian visual artists and their works. The focus is on the Toronto area and its artists, and some of this information dates back to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Geography

The collection provides current and historical area studies of the world. Emphasis is on Canadian material. Coverage includes:

  • Cultural, human and physical geography
  • Political and economic geography
  • Geographical theory and modeling systems
  • Demography and population studies, including migration
  • Historical geography

History and the Humanities

The collection contains primary and secondary material. Coverage includes:

  • World history, all nations, all eras, with special emphasis on Canada, the USA, Western Europe and the Commonwealth.
  • Military history, including battles, tactics, military technology, uniforms and registers.
  • Holocaust studies, including the Nuremberg Trials, visual records of the Holocaust and personal memoirs.
  • Exploration and discovery, primarily of Canada, the Americas and the Commonwealth.
  • Biographies, historical dictionaries, chronologies and fact books
  • Religion, including sacred texts and histories all major religious groups.
  • Mythology with a focus on Western Europe and Native Americans.
  • Philosophy, including all major philosophers philosophical schools and all historical periods, with special emphasis on western philosophy.

Law and Government

The library is a full depository for federal and Ontario provincial government documents. Selected international government documents, and documents authored by international agencies, such as the United Nations, are also collected. Legislative materials are held currently and historically and they include Canadian and Ontario bills, statutes and regulations. Hansard debates, Standing Committee reports, Orders in Council, and decisions of regulatory bodies, such as the Ontario Labour Relations Board, Ontario Human Rights Tribunal and the CRTC are also available. Labour Arbitration Cases are available in print, as are Supreme Court Reports and Federal Court Reports. Other case law is available electronically through services subscribed to by the Library.

The law collection focuses on supporting research on individual legal interests and rights through its many self-help materials.

Literature and Writing

The literature collection comprises literature written in English and French with emphasis on Canadian, British and American authors. Coverage includes:

  • Original Canadian works in English and French.
  • World literature in translation.
  • Literary criticism and literary biography.
  • Literary histories of civilizations, eras, and countries.
  • The "Canadian Catalogue" - a unique file providing extensive biographical and critical information on Canadian authors in English.
  • Writers' guides, style manuals and publishing information.
  • A wide range of English language dictionaries, linguistics, and basic and advanced writing guides.
  • Selective works on journalism and the press with a focus on Canadian material

Picture Collection

This unique collection consists of more than one million images clipped from books, magazines, calendars and other sources. Images are filed under 32,000 subject headings and include:

  • People
  • Places
  • Period studies
  • Reproductions of artists' works

Pictures may be borrowed for a six-week period and renewed once. All Picture Collection material must be returned to the circulation desk at the Toronto Reference Library during library hours. For additional information on loan periods and how to get a library card, please click below.

A reference book collection focuses on illustrated design elements, including trademarks, logos, letterforms, borders and copyright free pictures.

User Education

 

Postcard Collection
A reference collection of more than 50,000 early 20th century to present day international postcards includes city and country scapes, as well as public buildings such as restaurants, hotels, schools, and railroad stations. Holiday and other celebratory occasions such as Halloween, Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day are also featured.

 

Canadian postcards can be found in the TRL Baldwin Room.

Science, Medicine and Technology

The science, medicine and technology collection covers the theory and practice of the pure and applied sciences.

Main subject areas include:

  • Astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology
  • Biology and life sciences: natural history, organic evolution and genetics, microbes and cell life, and physical anthropology
  • Botany: physiology, classification and identification of plant life, and gardening
  • Chemistry: inorganic and organic chemistry, spectroscopy and chromatography
  • Electronic components: manufacturers’ catalogues
  • Engineering: civil, mechanical, electrical, aerospace, chemical and biotechnology; transportation and automotive, military and nautical, and mining
  • Environmental, earth sciences and geology, including conservation of natural resources, ecological issues and pollution
  • Food: nutrition, cook books, diet theory and home economics
  • Mathematics : Algebra, calculus, statistics, geometry, topology, probabilities and applied mathematics; also, manuals and experiments in physics and chemistry
  • Medicine: etymology and treatment of diseases, gerontology; addictive behaviour and treatment, pharmacology, drugs and their use, history of medicine, nursing, dental services and medical examination preparation guides, allied health fields
  • Physics: mechanics, fluid mechanics, sound and related vibrations, optics, and molecular, atomic and nuclear physics
  • Schematics: an extensive collection covering models for radios, televisions, other audio equipment and VCRs dating from 1918
  • Shop manuals: repair and manufacturers’ manuals for automobiles from 1914 to present
  • Zoology and animal sciences: animal husbandry and veterinary sciences; pet care, classification and identification guides, morphology and physiology

The social science collection contains theoretical and practical works. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of Canadian materials.

Sports and Recreation

The collection specializes in Canadian biographies and sports teams.

  • Athletics and sports, including rules, history, statistics, track and field, equestrian, aquatic and air sports, hunting, fishing, shooting, sailing and combat sports.
  • Exercise, including yoga, weight training, running and stretching.

Travel collection

This collection contains current travel guides and information of interest to travelers and tourists.

  • Popular travel and accommodation guides.
  • Specialized literary and cultural guides.
  • Budget travel guides as well as richly illustrated titles for the armchair traveler.

For research purposes, the collection retains historical travel guides for Canada and Ontario.

Video and DVD Collections

The Video and DVD Collection consists of more than 13,000 documentary and instructional videos /DVDs.

Subjects include:

  • Business
  • Job searching
  • Literature
  • The arts
  • History
  • Science and Technology
  • The environment

The collection is a deposit for English language videos /DVDs produced by the National Film Board of Canada.

Any video/DVD with Public Performance Rights (PPR) may be viewed at one of five stations on the second floor.
