Genealogy Collection

The North York Central Library's Canadiana Department has a large and comprehensive collection of genealogical research materials. The Genealogy Collection focuses on Ontario although there are many resources for all of Canada.

Some materials are microfilm and microfiche copies acquired from institutions such as the Library and Archives of Canada and the Archives of Ontario.

Specialized catalogues, indexes and finding aids to additional information in the collections are available at the library. Some finding aids are available online from Toronto Public Library or the external organizations that own the original materials.

Collections of major genealogical societies

Several major genealogical societies house their genealogical collections at the Canadiana Department. Titles of books are not listed in the Toronto Public Library Catalogue. You must check catalogues belonging to the individual societies to obtain a list of their titles.

Resources include the most complete collection of Ontario cemetery transcriptions, family charts, published family histories, genealogical periodicals. Go to the OGS library catalogue:



Includes New England Historical and Genealogical Register from 1847 on, and family histories from the eastern coast of the United States. The collection has materials to help Canadians research their New England ancestry, including the vital records for Massachusetts and Connecticut up to 1850, as well as town histories and genealogies.
A full set of the New England Historical & Genealogical Register is available in the library.

A small but growing collection which includes genealogical resources for Eastern Europe, genealogical handbooks, and the periodicals Shem Tov and Avotaynu

Includes registers of baptisms, marriages and burials for many parishes of Quebec and Ontario and genealogical dictionaries of French-Canadian families. Recent acquisitions include the Drouin Repertoire alphabetique des mariages Canadian-francais, 1760-1935

  • Immigration Branch, Central Registry Files Index and selected correspondence files from the Barnardo, Middlemore, Macpherson and other sponsoring organizations

  • Juvenile inspection reports which provide genealogically significant details about individual juvenile immigrants

Li-Ra-Ma Index: A nominal index to about 11,000 files known as Passport/Identity Papers created by Russian Consuls in Canada between 1900 and 1918 and held by the National Archives of Canada. Files exist in this collection for Russians, Ukranians, Finns, Poles, Armenians, etc. as well as for Jews, German Mennonites and Doukhobors.

Ontario Immigration records:
Records of the Department of Immigration, 1831 to 1892 (formerly the Toronto Emigration Office Records or “Hawke Papers”). These records include outgoing correspondence of the Chief Emigrant Agent for Upper Canada and Canada West, and arrival and assisted immigration registers between 1831 and 1892.

[Records of the Department of Immigration], 1869-1901. These nominal lists document those who emigrated under special bonus schemes and under other special assisted passage schemes.
