After School Newcomer Hubs - Volunteers
About the Program
The After School Newcomer Hubs offer newcomer students in grades 7-10 free homework help in math, science, English, French, and other subjects as needed. The homework help is provided by trained volunteer tutors and laptops are available for assignments and research. Electronic gaming and other fun activities can also be enjoyed.

What the Volunteer Does
- Helps newcomer students in grades 7-10 with homework, particularly math, science, English and French
- Assists students at a set location and time each week
- Provides positive encouragement and informal mentoring to students
- Works with library staff and other volunteers to run the program
Volunteer Benefits
- Gain knowledge of tutoring techniques
- Hands-on experience tutoring students in grades 7-10; knowledge of the Canadian curriculum
- Letter of reference upon successful completion of the program
- After six months, volunteers do not pay overdue library fines
Volunteer Requirements
- Volunteers include adults, seniors, post-secondary students, as well as high school students who can provide a reference letter from their school
- Participate in the program on a consistent weekly basis
- Subject expertise in math, science, English, or French preferred, as well as other subjects to meet student needs
- Assist students at a set time each week
- Speak and write English fluently
- Familiarity with computers
- Ability to relate well to youth and enjoy helping them
- Ability to work in a co-operative, team environment
- Ability to communicate in a language other than English is an asset
