Frequently Asked Questions about Volunteering

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the Adult Literacy Program. Here are some frequently asked questions about our program.

1. How old do I have to be to volunteer?
The Adult Literacy Program accepts volunteers who are 19 years of age and older.
2. What skills do I need to volunteer?
In order to volunteer, you need to speak English fluently and write English fluently.
3. Is this ESL?
No. This is a literacy program for adults who speak English fluently.
4. How long do I have to commit to the program?
Volunteers must make a six month commitment to the program. Volunteers can continue past the six month time. Toronto Public Library has volunteers who have been volunteering for more than 5 years. If you are looking for a short term volunteer opportunity, visit the following web site:

5. I'm on Ontario Works or I am on Ontario Disability Support Program. Can I still apply to be a volunteer?
Yes. As long as you are willing to make a six month commitment to the program, you can apply to be a volunteer.
6. I am a teenager who needs volunteer hours for school. Can I volunteer with this program?

7. Is Tutor Training offered?
Yes. After you are accepted into the program, you will be notified about when Tutor Training is offered. Volunteers go through Tutor Training before they are paired with a learner.
8. Where do I meet with the person I'm helping?
Volunteers and Learners meet in the Adult Literacy Office under the supervision of the Coordinator.
9. How often do I meet with the person I'm tutoring?
Volunteers and learners meet once a week for two hours.
10. Does the Adult Literacy Program stop during the summer?
No. The program runs continuously throughout the year.
11. Can I get a letter of reference from you?
Up to 6 months in the program, we will give a letter verifying participation in the program. After 6 months, we can provide a full reference
