Volunteering for Leading To Reading

As a reading and homework help volunteer you and your student will meet once a week at one of the Leading To Reading locations at libraries across the city. You'll read together, play learning-related games, and work on homework assignments. Mostly, you'll turn reading and learning into a positive experience.

Reading games and activities

To find out more about volunteering, read on.

Leading To Reading Volunteers are responsible for:

  • Meeting your student at the library for a scheduled one-hour session each week
  • Motivating and encouraging your student to read
  • Reading together, and playing learning-related games and activities
  • Helping your student complete homework and improve learning skills
  • Taking notes about each week's session
  • Keeping parents (or guardians) and program staff up-to-date on the child's progress

You must be able to:

  • Speak and write English fluently
  • Relate well to children
  • Work with children on a one-to-one basis, though teaching experience is not essential
  • Work independently
  • Communicate well with children and adults
  • Act as a role model for reading

Training

At the training session, library staff cover:

  • Basic reading theory
  • Tutoring techniques
  • Problem solving
  • Time management
  • Behaviour management
  • Building relationships with the children
  • Creating a positive attitude to learning and reading
  • Program structure and procedures

On-site Orientation

At the library, staff cover:

  • Program procedures for your particular library
  • Local library and program resources
  • Printed materials outlining strategies for helping children with their reading, and homework

When and Where

Leading To Reading takes place in one-hour sessions at libraries across Toronto. The volunteer and their partner meet once a week, at a time that suits both. Generally, Leading To Reading happens after school, on weekday evenings, or on Saturdays throughout the school year. You may apply at any time.

On-site Support

Library staff are here to provide assistance and supervision during Leading To Reading. They're pleased to consult with you at other times by appointment.

Privileges

Overdue fines are waived for current volunteers with six months or more of active service.
