Adult literacy collections at the Toronto Public Library

You will find collections of adult literacy resources at selected branches of the Toronto Public Library. These collections are for adults to improve their reading, writing and math skills and for literacy tutors to use as part of the tutoring process.

The reading level of the collections ranges from grade one to grade eight and includes novels, poetry, short stories and a wide selection of non-fiction materials.

These collections are divided into three categories and include books, book/tape kits and videos.

  • Learner/Tutor
Learners and tutors may work together or use these books on their own. Included are atlases, dictionaries, and workbooks on: math, reading skills, building vocabulary, improving writing skills and developing life skills.
  • Learner Reading
These materials include fiction and non-fiction written at various levels. The most basic books are written in clear language and include pictures to help the reader understand the text.

Stories written by adult learners are found in this section. Using their life experience, learners have written autobiographies, fiction and poetry.
  • Tutor
These materials provide information on teaching or coaching math, writing, spelling, and other topics. Subjects of general interest are included and cover principles of adult learning, coaching, teaching tips and strategies, and adapting or creating learning materials.

How do I borrow materials?

To borrow books, magazines, videos, cassettes, CDs and CDRoms from the Toronto Public Library you need a library card.

Library cards are free to those who live, work, go to school, or own property in the City of Toronto.

To get a library card you need to show one piece of photo I.D. with your address, such as a driver's license, or one piece of name I.D. and one piece of mail with your current address, such as your social insurance card and your phone bill.
