Services to the Literacy Community
Where can you find 12 million free books, tapes and videos? At the 99 branches of the Toronto Public Library! The Toronto Public Library has an incredible range of services to offer every member of the community, from programs for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers to free computer access. If you have difficulty reading you might not think of the library as your kind of place. An effective way to connect adult learners and their families to their local library is for library staff to visit learners in the classroom. With 99 library branches, the Toronto Public Library has a location near you! A field trip to a library branch is a great follow-up to an in-class presentation. Learners can get a library card, if they don't already have one, and tour the branch. This is an opportunity to welcome learners to the library and to reinforce information given in the class presentation. All library branches have computers, and several have computer centres suitable for group instruction The Internet is discussed everywhere, yet many adults have not had an opportunity to explore its potential. In the Internet Basics Session, we help participants acquire basic navigation skills as well as an understanding of what the Internet includes and how it is used. Adult literacy classes and groups can book an Internet Basics Session which includes an orientation on how to use a mouse. The session is designed to meet the needs of new adult readers and is conducted by Adult Literacy Services staff. Library literacy staff love to talk about literacy resources! Since the Toronto Public Library buys more literacy resources than any other public library in Canada, our staff are experts in what has been published in the field and what works with adult learners.
