What you'll find
The Centre for People with Disabilities provides a range of services, equipment training and personal assistance to help patrons get the most out of the Toronto Reference Library.
With elevators to all levels, the library is fully accessible. Staff in the Subject Centres and Centre for People with Disabilities work together to deliver material, and the full range of library services.
Count on staff for help any weekday between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., or by appointment at other times. We also suggest you make an appointment if you're looking for equipment training, library orientation or other individual service. Of course, you're welcome to use the library equipment and resources whenever the library is open.
Library Collections at the Centre
- Books, magazines and information files on a wide range of disability issues
- A small collection of Talking Books and recorded periodicals for registered Talking Books patrons
- Closed captioned and described videos, located on the second floor
Services
- Individual assistance for people using this library
- Free training on the equipment
- Referrals to Home Library Service and other services at the Toronto Public Library
- Direct contact with the Centre for People with Disabilities through the teletypewriter (TTY)
Equipment
- Magnifiers
- Closed circuit television systems (CCTV's) that enlarge print up to 60 times, with black and white, and colour monitors.
- Kurzweil Personal Reading machine that scans printed text and reads it aloud in a synthetic voice
- Computer workstation with Kurzweil 1000 software that scans print and reads it aloud in a synthetic voice
- Braille typewriter
- Teletypewriter (TTY) for free local calls
- A wheelchair for in-library use
- Worktables and study carrels with wheelchair accessibility
- Computer workstations with Internet access, Microsoft Office and screen magnification software (Zoomtext) and screen reading software (JAWS)
- Page turner
- Book stands
- Cassette players (2/4 track)
- FM amplification system, available upon request
Accessibility Features
- Automatic door at the main entrance
- Level entrances at all doors
- Elevators to all six floors
- Unisex washroom on the first floor
- Accessible washroom stalls on all other floors
- No parking at the library. However, parking lots are nearby, on the south side of the library at the Bay parking garage, and one block north at Canadian Tire.
