The Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy was founded in 1970 by the donation of science fiction editor and writer Judith Merril's personal collection.

Since that time, the Merril Collection holdings have been broadened to include original science fiction and fantasy art. The colourful cover illustrations of pulp magazines and the action-packed covers of science fiction and fantasy paperbacks have attracted generations of readers.

The Merril Collection holdings include art by some of the most gifted artists in the field: Frank Kelly Freas, Leo and Diane Dillon, Stephen Hickman, Ron Lightburn, Ed Emshwiller, and Virgil Finlay.

Original art is sometimes displayed in the Merril Collection reading room on the 3rd floor of the Lillian Smith building. Art may also be used as part of a lecture or tour upon request.
