Revised and expanded edition, 2007.

The beginnings of Lawrence Park go back to 1907 when Wilfrid Servington Dinnick, the young, English-born president of a Toronto loan and mortgage company, convinced the board of directors to purchase two farm properties near Yonge Street and Lawrence Avenue East. His intention was to create a garden suburb - one of the first in Canada - for the city’s middle classes.

Originally published in 1994, the revised, expanded book now features 33 stops highlighting 48 houses and other sites of architectural and historical interest. It also includes an overview history of Lawrence Park; biographies of major architects and important residents and more than 50 illustrations of historic maps, archival photographs and drawings. Many of these historical images are from early promotional materials for Lawrence Park and are identified for the first time. One of the book’s many new features is “Lost Lawrence Park”, listing original houses that have been demolished and replaced with new buildings.

The Most Attractive Resort in Town: Public Library Service in West Toronto Junction, 1888 - 2009
Barbara Myrvold

2nd revised and expanded edition

Paper, 82 p., 126 b&w illus., 28 cm.

Retail Price: $20

Toronto Public Library Board, 2009.

This chronicle goes back to 1888, when library service was introduced to the area by the West Toronto Junction Mechanics’ Institute and extends to 2009, the 100th anniversary of the opening of Toronto Public Library’s Carnegie-funded branch on Annette Street.

Originally published 20 years ago, this new edition is triple in length with four times more illustrations than before, and features an attractive colour cover and a detailed index. Major community events and trends that influenced the library’s growth and biographical details about key personalities are woven into the history. A special section is provided on Ellis and Connery, the architectural firm of Junction resident James A. Ellis who planned the Carnegie library as well as more than 50 other local buildings.

“The revised and expanded edition of The Most Attractive Resort in Town: Public Library Service in West Toronto Junction, 1888 – 2009, …is as much a history of the Junction as it is a history of the impressive library on Annette Street. … And now, thanks to Ms. Myrvold's book, the secret of the Junction's colourful history, characters and architecture is as close as the nearest library.” Dave LeBlanc, Globe and Mail, Oct. 23, 2009, G4.

" ... this profusely illustrated book describes the history of the public library in the West Toronto Junction area of our city from the opening of the community's original Mechanics' Institute in 1888. It describes the dedication of the present Annette Street branch in 1908 (using a grant of $20,000 from a foundation established by American industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie) right up until the present day."

Reviews for 2008 edition

"Just like the dozen other books Ms. Myrvold has been involved with for the TPL, this is a thoroughly researched document of a place that is all but gone. In this case, it's a mostly working-class area just like the kind almost everyone has lived in at one time but almost every publisher overlooks. … Thanks to the Toronto Public Library, that's no longer the case."
Dave Leblanc, Globe and Mail, Dec. 4, 2008

Reviews for 1997 edition

"St. Clair West takes us to places that almost everyone has forgotten were places a century ago, when Toronto was still a fairly small city ringed by myriad farming and industrial centres... We have Nancy Byers and Barbara Myrvold to thank for bringing back to mind those folk and what they did."
John Bentley Mays, Globe & Mail, Jan. 7., 1998.

"This is a rich portrait. . . . Byers and Myrvold take pains to cover every aspect of history, but do it with enough style to make the text entertaining, a kaleidoscope rather than an inventory. . . . Many a photographic jaw-dropper in this fine addition to a series that is itself one of the many outstanding contributions the TPL has made to life in old Toronto."
Ted Mumford, NOW, Dec. 11-17, 1997.

"Through informative text and precious old photos, this book (the term "handbook" really doesn't do justice to the work of authors Nancy Byers and Barbara Myrvold) describes the history and development of the Carlton, Davenport, Earlscourt and Oakwood communities that form part of Greater Toronto."
Mike Filey, Toronto Sunday Sun, Oct. 7, 1997.
