Who is allowed to borrow a book?To sign out a book, you must have a valid adult or teen Toronto Public Library card. Children (12 and under) are welcomed to sign out a book, if they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Need a library card?
Can I place a hold on a book in advance?Yes. To place a hold on a "human book", call or drop into one of the three respective participating branches starting Saturday, October 6. You must provide a valid adult or teen Toronto Public Library card number and your phone number. In an effort to make the books available to as many people as possible, please show up within ten minutes of your reservation. Otherwise, after the ten minute grace period, we will free up your reservation for other customers in line.
How many books can I place a hold on?You can place a hold on one book in advance, but you are welcome to borrow other books on the program date (Saturday, October 20). Please present your library card on the program date to sign out your reserved book.
How do I sign out a book?To sign out a book, you must present a valid adult or teen Toronto Public Library card. Need a library card?
How long can I sign out a book for?Borrowers can sign out a book for a maximum of 30 minutes per session. Each book is available for a maximum of seven sessions. Please note that the borrower or the book can end the session at any time at their discretion.
What happens if my book does not show up on the program date?In the event that a book cancels or does not show up on the day of, Toronto Public Library will make every effort possible to find a replacement, although this is not guaranteed.

Can I sign up for sign language interpretation?Toronto Public Library offers sign language interpretation upon advanced request for library programs and events. Please request this with the respective Human Library branch or call 416-393-7100 (TTY only).
Can I photograph/record my session?Participants are not allowed to photograph or record the session. Please note that members of the media may be present and request to photograph, record, and/or interview you. It is up to your discretion if you'd like to participate.
