Historical Background

1858
Weston Mechanics' Institute established, 8 February. Library located in the home of the librarian, James Cruickshank, Main Street (now Weston Road).

1885
Weston Mechanics' Institute revitalized and reorganized. Book collection that had been stored in the drug store of John Hathaway Banks, Main Street (now Weston Road) transferred to the new premises, two rooms in the rear of the Weston Town Hall (also known as "Dufferin Hall") on Main Street (now Weston Road), northwest corner of Little Avenue.

1912
Weston Public Library Board established and the library converted into a free library.

1913
Toronto's Carnegie Libraries - Weston
Carnegie Corporation of New York granted $10,000 to the Weston Public Library Board to construct a public library, 2 January.

1914
Weston Public Library opened at the northeast corner of Weston Road and King Street, 31 December. Architects, Lindsay and Brydon.

1967
Weston Public Library Board ceases and is taken over by the York Public Library Board when the Town of Weston and the Township of York are amalgamated as the Borough of York, 1 January.

1971
Hours of service extended with the branch opening on Wednesdays.

1977
Library board studies several site possibilities for the erection of a new Weston Branch.

1978
Bylaw (2971-78) passed by City of York Council designating the building and lands as being of historic and architecture value, under the Ontario Heritage Act, 24 April.

1979
Historical plaque dedicated by the Borough of York and the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Recreation.

1981
Renovated and expanded, including restoration of the main entrance. Dunlop, Farrow & Aitken Architects.

1982
Branch reopened to the public 11 september.

2005
Refurbishment. Painted, recarpeted, furniture re-upholstered, new computer work stations for public. Closed 31 May to 15 June.

2007
New hours, 8 January. Hours open per week decreased from 51.5 to 50.5.
