Historical Background

1909
Library incorporated at North Toronto. By 31 December 1909, the public library association has receipts of $311.70 including a municipal grant of $60 and 697 volumes.

1912
Town of North Toronto is annexed to the City of Toronto, 15 December. The assets of the town's library are transferred to the Toronto Public Library.

1913
Northern Branch opened June. Located in rented premises at 2239 Yonge Street, south of Eglinton Avenue.

1915
Relocated to rented premises at 2435 Yonge Street, north of Eglinton Avenue.

1917
Relocated to rented premises in former YMCA building, Albertus Avenue, corner of Yonge Street, 12 January.

1922
Former Eglinton Presbyterian Church, 22 St. Clement's Avenue northwest corner of Yonge Street, purchased for Northern Branch.

1923
Northern Branch relocated to new site, 15 January.

1975
St. Clement's Branch closed, 29 November.
Northern District Library opened 15 December. Pentland & Baker, Architects. Film Department relocated to Northern District after closure of Learning Resources Centre at Forest Hill Branch.

1983
Stanley Knowles Housing Cooperative Inc., a multi-storey apartment building, added above the library. Cornerstone laid by Stanley Knowles, M.P., 16 July.

1989
Closed for carpet replacement on 19 August. Reopened 7 September.

1994
Telephone Information Service; started 15 June. Film Department absorbed into organizational structure of Northern District.

1996
Film Department service closed to the public on 1 July.

1999
Telephone Information Service closed August 1999.

2007
New hours, 8 January. Hours open per week increased from 60.5 to 65.5.
