    The Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy is an internationally known popular culture collection of 64,000+ items available for reading room use.

    The Merril Collection contains science fiction and fantasy novels, manuscripts, pulp magazines, fanzines, periodicals, graphic novels, and fantasy role-playing games. Our non-fiction collection includes bibliographies, biographies, critical studies of SF & F novels, television and film, art books, utopian materials and academic journals.

    The Merril Collection was founded in 1970 when author and editor Judith Merril donated her personal collection to the Toronto Public Library.

Historical Background

1970
Spaced Out Library established by TPL Board with a donation from science fiction writer Judith Merril. Located in a house at 566 Palmerston Avenue.

1975
Relocated to Boys and Girls House, February.

1980
Friends of The Spaced Out Library established.

1982
Circulating collection established.

1987
SOL RISING newsletter first published.

1991
Collection renamed The Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy, 1 January.

1995
Boys & Girls House branch closed 1 April. New Lillian H. Smith branch opened 18 October. Phillip H. Carter, Architect.

2002-2006
Merril Collection fiction materials added to the TPL online catalogue.
