Historical Background

1945
Township of York Public Library Board established.

1946
Library opened in a rented facility at Oakwood Avenue and Vaughan Road, 9 September.

1948
York Township Council approves building a main library building and two branches.

1949
Tenders called (summer) and building started, September.

1951
Main Library opened at current location, 29 January, officially opened on 21 March. The storey-and-a-half, red-brick building included York Township Public Library administrative and technical services offices, book storage space and a bookmobile garage. Architect: Albert Vine.

1962
Land acquired for an addition.

1964
Two-storey addition with basement opened, May.

1967
Becomes part of the York Public Library Board, when the Town of Weston and the Township of York are amalgamated as the Borough of York, 1 January.

1971
Hours of service extended with the branch opening on Wednesdays and Sunday afternoons, October to April; Sunday openings discontinued in 1976.

1978
Renovation.

1981
Hours reduced with Monday closings.

1993
A new main library facility (and a new branch library) to serve the southeast quadrant of York is recommended in a feasibility study by the Randolph Group.

1997
Library renamed in honour of Maria A. Shchuka, Head Librarian, 1979-1996.

1999
Sunday opening initiated, 21 March.

2002
Closed for reconstruction, 3 March, Diamond & Schmitt, Architects Inc.

2003
Opened, 11 August.
Hours increased from 51.5 to 58 hour/week (Monday openings)

2007
Open hours per week increased on 8 January from 58 to 63.
