Historical Background
1950
Site for a main library purchased by the Etobicoke Public Library Board from the Kingsway Baptist Church.
1951
Township of Etobicoke Public Library Board pays $7,410 to Kingsway Baptist Church for two lots, "having a frontage of about Ninety feet (90') on the southerly side of Birchview Boulevard by a depth of One Hunderd and Eighteen Feet (118') on the easterly side of Brentwood Road" as the site for its main library, 6 July.
1954
Library Board requests Etobicoke Township Council to issue debentures of $185,000 to build the library on Brentwood, May.
1955
Main library opened, 20 July. Officially opened, 28 September. Headquarters
for the Etobicoke Public Library transferred here from Park Lawn Road,
including administration, technical services, and the bookmobile office. Arthur H. Eadie, Architect.
1961
Bookmobile office and stacks relocated to rented quarters on Dundas Street, moving to the new Richview Library in 1966.
1964
Technical Services Division moved to offices on Dundas Street near Burnamthorpe Road, moving to the new Richview Library in 1966.
1966
Etobicoke Public Library's main library and adminstrative offices are relocated to the new Richview Library. Brentwood reorganized as a district library.
1967
Brentwood Branch is taken over by the new Borough of Etobicoke Public Library Board formed when the Township of Etobicoke becomes part of the Borough of Etobicoke effective 1 January.
1970
New arts room created in old staff work areas in the basement. Alterations include construction of an enclosed staircase on the outside of the building to connect the new room with the reference area on the main floor. Dunlop, Wardell, Matsui and Aitken, architects, engineers & planners.
1971
Shut-In Service for Etobicoke Public Libraries located here.
1988
Closed for renovations, 4 July. Joseph Gerskup, Architect.
1989
Reopened 13 March.
2007
New hours, 8 January. Hours open per week increased from 58 to 63.
