Historical Background

1888
West Toronto Junction Mechanics' Institute established. Library located in Campbell Block, Dundas Street West, northwest corner of Keele Street.

1894
Relocated to Kilborn Hall, Dundas Street East (now West), northeast corner of Van Horne Street (now Heintzman Avenue).

1895
Renamed Toronto Junction Public Library.

1908
Toronto's Carnegie Libraries - Western
Renamed West Toronto Public Library; its Board granted $20,000 on 6 April by the Carnegie Corporation of New York to erect a public library. Site acquired on Annette Street, southwest corner of Medland Avenue.

1909
City of West Toronto is annexed to the City of Toronto. The assets of the West Toronto Library Board, including a $20,000 library building (under construction), 3,800 books and $107.41 cash on hand, are transferred to the Toronto Public Library Board. It opens West Branch, 1 September. Ellis & Connery, Architects.

1962
Retrofitted; reopened 14 April. Renamed Annette Branch.

1980
Renovated, Sillaste & Nakashima Architects. Reopened 9 June.

1990
Closed 13 August for minor retrofit. Reopened 9 September.

1994
Hours reduced 24 May from 60.5 to 48 hours per week. Closed 2 July for HVAC retrofit. Reopened 12 September.

1998
Listed by Heritage Toronto as historical property, 1 October.

2002
Refurbishment. Closed 28 March to 11 April.

2007
Hours open per week increased on 8 January from 48 to 50.5
