Searching for Books, DVDs, CDs, Magazines
| Basic Search |
- If you know the exact title, author, or library subject heading, use the top search box. E.g. Sparrow Nights or O'Brian, Patrick
|
- If you know a partial title, author, or subject or a few keywords, use the bottom search box. E.g. war 1818 or goblet fire
|
| If you want to limit a search to a branch (e.g. York Woods), format (e.g. DVD), language (e.g. French) and/or age level (e.g. children's material), use the drop-down boxes below the search box. |
Important Note on Keyword Searching:
Use single quotes for phrases. E.g. 'rob roy'

| Advanced Search |
| Advanced Search allows you to search combinations of authors, titles, subjects, and keywords. |
| Examples: |
- Author: Asimov AND Subject: Nervous system – finds items by Isaac Asimov about the nervous system.
|
- Author: Atwood NOT Subject: Poetry – finds items by Margaret Atwood excluding her poems.

Please Note
If you want to refine a search to a branch (e.g. Mimico), language (e.g. Tagalog), format (e.g. Book (Regular print)), year of publication (e.g. 1999-2005), age level (e.g. teen material) or sort results by (e.g. new to old), use the drop-down boxes below the search box. |
| Call Number Search |
| A call number is used to organise books on the shelf by their subject. For example most books about job resumes have the same call number: 650.14. If you know a call number and want to see other books that are in the same shelf area, use this search (remember to limit your search to a specific branch!) |

| Use picture icons to help you find recent materials on some popular topics. |
| DVDs |
- Use the Keyword search.
- Choose DVD from the Format drop-down menu
- Click Search
This search will retrieve a list of all DVDs.
To find a specific DVD, enter keyword(s) from the DVD's title in the keyword box.
E.g., enter bourne in the keyword box and choose DVD from the Format menu to find the Jason Bourne movies on DVD
To find DVDs by a specific director or featuring a particular performer, enter keyword(s) from the person's name in the keyword box.
E.g., enter cronenberg in the keyword box and choose DVD from the Format menu to find David Cronenberg's movies on DVD
To find DVDs in a specific language, use the Language menu in combination with the Format menu.
E.g, choose Hindi from the Language menu and DVD from the format menu to find Hindi movies on DVD
Alternative method: subject search
- Choose Subject from the Exact Search menu on the Basic Search screen.
- Type the language name followed by DVDs – e.g., Russian DVDs.
- Click Search.

| CDs |
- Use the Keyword search.
- Choose CD from the Format drop-down menu.
- Click Search
This search will retrieve a list of all CDs.
To find a specific CD, enter keyword(s) from the CD's title in the keyword box.
E.g., enter rust sleeps in the keyword box and choose CD from the Format menu to find Neil Young's Rust Never Sleeps
To find CDs by a specific artist or performer, enter keyword(s) from the artist's name in the keyword box.
E.g., enter rachmaninoff in the keyword box and choose CD from the Format menu to find CDs of Rachmaninoff's music

| Magazines |
- Choose Advanced Search from the menu on the left side of the screen.
- Choose Periodical Title and enter an exact title or title keyword(s) in the box.
- Click Search
The library also has tools to help you find articles online.

- Choose Subject from the Exact Search menu on the Basic Search screen.
- Type the subject in the search box.
- Click Search.

| ISBNs |
Type the ISBN in the Keyword search box. |
| Publishers |
Type the publisher's name in the Keyword search box. |
| French-language titles/Titres en français |

| Chinese accession numbers (KCC numbers) |
Type the number in the Keyword search box. |
