Branch History


1834 Scarboro Subscription Library established at a public meeting at St. Andrew's Church, 7 April. Library located at Springfield Farm (now on St. Andrew's Drive), the home of James A. Thomson, the first librarian. Relocated in 1846 to a small frame building erected near St. Andrew's Church.
1878 Scarboro Subscription Library dissolved, 7 December. Replaced by Scarborough Mechanics' Institute, established 9 December.
1896 Scarborough Centennial Memorial Library constructed and opened as part of Scarborough Township's centennial celebrations. The building stands at 117 St. Andrew's Drive, just east of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. The Scarborough Historical Society dedicated a plaque to the Scarborough Centennial Memorial Library on 18 June, 1978. The building was included on the Scarborough LACAC's List of Designated Properties, 11 February, 1985.
1955 Taken over by the newly-formed Public Library Board of the Township of Scarborough, becoming one of its first three branches. Called St. Andrew's Branch. Officially opened 1 October.
1961 St. Andrew's Branch closed. Bendale Branch opened in current location, 11 May. Mandel Sprachman Architect.
1979 Retrofitted. Mandel Sprachman Architect.
1994 Weekly service hours reduced from 47 to 40, beginning 5 July.
1999 Renovated. Closed 3 May - 4 October. Stephen Teeple Architect.
2007 New open hours, 8 January. Number of open hours per week unchanged.
