Inscribed in brown ink, l.l.: copied by E. Wyly Grier / 1896; In black ink, l.l.: Original by A R. V. ["A R. V." correction over "H. P. R."?] Crease.; l.r.: Copied for J. Ross Robertson by E. Wyly Grier. 1896.; b.: Ridout House and Grounds, fronting on North side of Duke Street opposite Princess Street between Caroline (Sherbourne) / and Ontario Streets running back to Duchess Street - 1804-1858. JRR and JRR (1912) catalogues state this w.c. is after a view by Anthony Raynolds Vyvyan Crease. However, 'Evening Telegram' series "Landmarks of Toronto" 19 January 1889 and 'Landmarks of Toronto' v.1, p. 281 state the original picture was "made in September, 1858, by Mr. H.P.R. Crease [i.e. Sir Henry Pering Pellew Crease], now one of the Superior Judges in British Columbia."
