Inscribed in ink over pencil, l.l.: ORIGINAL BY A.R.V. ["A.R.V." correction over "H.P.R."?] CREASE.; l.r.: COPIED FOR J. ROSS ROBERTSON BY E. WYLY GRIER. 1896.; b.: South side of Duchess Street between Ontario and Caroline (Sherborne) Streets, View of Ridout House 1804-58. Watermark: J WHATMAN JRR and JRR (1912) catalogues state this w.c. is after a view by Anthony Reynolds Vyvyan Crease. However, 'Evening Telegram' series "Landmarks of Toronto" 19 January 1889 and 'Landmarks of Toronto' v.1, p. 281 state the original picture was "made in September, 1858, by Mr. H.P.R. Crease [i.e. Sir Henry Pering Pellew Crease], now one of the Superior Judges in British Columbia" and also state "The figure in the foreground is Mr. Thomas G. Ridout". Looking south west, showing rear of Thomas Ridout's house on Adelaide St. E., north side, between Sherbourne & Ontario Sts. JRR (1912) 503. Rev. January 1982
