Service Update

All Toronto Public Library branches will be open from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 24 and closed on Thursday, December 25 and Friday, December 26. Branches will be open as usual on Saturday, December 27. Sunday Service will resume on January 4, 2015.

Branch History


Year Details
1889 Mechanics' Institute is formed in Highland Creek. Prominent citizens meet in December, and decide to ask for incorporation and to canvass the village for members at $1 per year.
1890 Highland Creek Mechanics Institute incorporated, 28 January. Library opened in Elliot's Hall (Old Kingston Road near Military Trail), 1 March.
1895 Highland Creek Mechanics Institute becomes Highland Creek Public Library. Library relocated to a hardware store (Tredway-Knowles-Morrish) on the south side of (Old) Kingston Road.
1930 Elliot's Hall is demolished and the library is relocated to a rent-free hall above a store (built 1861) at the present Old Kingston Road and Morrish Road. Gladys Kemp (later Cole) becomes the librarian, starting her 39-year career of mostly voluntary service to local readers.
1947 A government inspector orders the library to be moved to more suitable premises or it will be closed. Relocated to the home of the librarian, Gladys Kemp Cole, on Old Kingston Road.
1954 Relocated to new premises built at a cost of $2,500 at 22 Morrish Road, south of (Old) Kingston Road beside the fire hall. Officially opened by Scarborough Reeve Oliver Crockford, October.
1955 Highland Creek Public Library is taken over by the newly-formed Public Library Board of the Township of Scarborough, becoming one its first three branches. Officially opened, 1 October.
1964 Relocated to a leased storefront at 277-279 Old Kingston Road, 15 March.
1994 Storefront location closed, June. Relocated to present location, August. Officially opened, 29 September. Quadrangle Architects.
1996 Recipient of an Ontario Library Association Building Award for Best Branch Library.
1998 Becomes a branch of the Toronto Public Library with municipal amalgamation.
2007 New Hours, 8 January. Number of open hours per week unchanged.
