Branch History


Year Details
1972 Fairview Community Branch opened in rental space at 5 Fairview Mall Drive. Rental space is located next to the 1.964 acre site on which the Fairview Regional Branch Library is to be constructed. Site was purchased by the Library Board from Fairview Corporation.
1976 Construction completed May 27th. Brook-Carruthers-Shaw Architects. Community Theatre with seating for 292 patrons.
1982 Fairview moves to an automated circulation system (ULISYS) and closes for five weeks beginning in June to "link" its entire collection. Operational 13 September.
1986 Audio Visual and Public Relations and Planning Departments move from Fairview to interim quarters outside Fairview prior to new opening of new Central Library.
1987 Administration Services move from 4th floor of Fairview Library to new quarters at Central Library; Canadiana Collection and staff move from 3rd floor of Fairview Library to new quarters at Central Library.
1988 Introduction of Adult Literacy service.
1989 Phased in renovation to include: Phase 1 (1989) Renovations to 3rd Floor; Phase 2 (1994) Renovations to 2nd Floor; Phase 3 (1994) Renovations to 4th floor.
1989 Rental of office space to the Ontario Audio Library, a volunteer-based organization that records non-fiction reading material for print disabled clients. Internal renovation of former Audio Visual/Public Relations and Planning Department.
1996 Introduction of North York Public Library's first coffee concession stand. Contract is awarded to The Daily Perk.
1998 Renovated - User Education Centre created. Philip Carter, Architect.
2005 Theatre renovated - seats, AV and lighting equipment for the theatre (microphones, CD player, VHS unit), cherry picker and renovation to the two theatre dressing rooms.
2007 New open hours, 8 January. Number of hours per week unchanged.
2009 Express Checkout as of December 2009.
2010 New hours, 4 January. Number of open hours per week increased from 59.5 to 65.5. Reading Garden established.
2012 Branch and Theatre closed for major renovation, 6 October.

Accessibility:

Elevator access from the 1st floor to the 4th floor is only available outside library hours. For security reasons, during library hours patrons wishing to access the 4th floor must take the elevator from the main floor (2nd floor). People with disabilities needing assistance can speak to any staff member.

Wheelchair accessible washrooms are on the second and fourth floors.
