Branch History


Year Details
1959 Library service to the Thorncliffe Park neighbourhood, developed in the late 1950’s on the site of an old race track, is provided by the Town of Leaside Public Library Board. In 1959 Library staff sends letters to more than 400 Thorncliffe Park apartment residents encouraging them to use their local library at 165 McRae Drive in Leaside.
1961 Thorncliffe Park Boys’ and Girls’ Branch is opened two afternoons a week at Thorncliffe Park School, 80 Thorncliffe Park Drive, by the Leaside Public Library Board, October. The Leaside Board of Education takes over the collections and operations of public libraries in schools, including Thorncliffe Park, 1 September 1966.
1966 Thorncliffe Park Branch opens in rented quarters in Chapel-in-the-Park United Church, 16 Thorncliffe Park Drive, 16 November. The deposit collection is available Wednesdays 1-5 and Saturdays 10-1 and 2-5.
1967 Thorncliffe Park Branch becomes part of the Borough of East York Public Library Board with municipal amalgamation. Opening hours and library space are increased.
1968 East York Public Library Board asks East York Council on 27 November to make available the property in Thorncliffe Park that Goldlist Management donated to the municipality for multi-purpose use.
1969 Dunlop. Wardall. Matsui. Aitken Architects are appointed on 12 March to design Thorncliff Branch, so named on 6 June.
1970 Thornciffe Branch opens on 30 May at 48 Thorncliffe Park Drive, and is officially opened on 5 October. The library is located on the main floor and the basement is leased to East York Council for a childcare centre and recreational uses.
1990 Five options are presented in a Feasibility study expansion of Thorncliffe Park Branch, prepared by Richard Williams Richard Fenner Architects Inc., 31 May.
1995 The children’s room is named 10 May for Hazel Thornton-Lazier, a member of the East York Public Library Board since 1974. Her contribution to the library community and her dedication to children’s services are honoured on 30 November.
1997 Jenner Jean-Marie Community Centre, operated by the Borough of East York Parks, Recreation & Operations Department, is added to building, opening on 2 February.
1998 Thorncliffe Branch becomes part of the Toronto Public Library with municipal amalgamation
2007 New hours, 8 January Open hours per week increased from 48.5 to 50.5. Closed for renovations, 8 December. Levitt Goodman Architects Ltd. & Phillip H. Carter, Architect.
2010 Branch reopened, 13 April. Levitt Goodman Architects Ltd. & Phillip H. Carter, Architect. Open hours per week increased from 50.5 to 62. New hours 13 September. Open hours per week increased from 63 to 65.5.
