We are proud to recognize and celebrate the support of these generous individuals, organizations and corporations, who make the work funded by the Annual Giving Campaign and the re:vitalize Capital Campaign possible. Our donors help the Toronto Public Library Foundation enhance and expand the Library's collections, programs, services, and community spaces.

Major Gifts - Corporate, Foundations and Associations

Great West Life, London Life & Canada Life

Toronto Public Library's Leading to Reading program received a boost in 2009 when Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life teamed up to renew their commitment of $20,000 to the program. Leading to Reading goes a long way in instilling a life long love of learning and reading for those who need it most, including many high-risk children in our city. Children emerge from the program with confidence in their abilities and increased self-esteem, having developed the skills to improve their performance in school and fulfil their full potential.

Manulife Financial

Manulife Financial continues to generously support the library's Leading to Reading program at the St. James Town branch, which helps children in grades 2 to 6 with below average reading skills. The support of Manulife Financial will make a significant impact in the quality of life of many children who need assistance in their learning and literacy abilities, helping them to improve their performance in school and achieve success in their personal lives.

National Bank Financial

In 2009, National Bank Financial fulfilled the second year in their generous three-year commitment to support Toronto Public Library's Storytime Outreach program. Storytime Outreach takes the library's quality in-branch story time program out into high needs areas of the city. The program, led by an experienced children's librarian, involves stories, songs, rhymes and conversation, and promotes reading and literacy to thousands of pre-school children and their parents and caregivers across the city.

RBC Foundation

Since 2008, RBC Foundation has supported cultural programming at Toronto Public Library, including sponsorship of both Black History Month in February and Asian Heritage Month in May. These two celebrations recognize the achievements of Canadians of African, Caribbean, and Asian descent, highlight the Library's historical connection to these communities, and promote its programming and services. Additionally, in 2009, RBC Foundation increased their support with an additional $10,000 to enhance the library's Black and Caribbean collection and South Asian collections.

Sun Life Financial

Over the past two years, Sun Life has generously supported the Sun Life Museum + Arts Pass program at Toronto Public Library, extending Torontonians' access to the civic and cultural life of the city and making the arts accessible to all. Sun Life has generously renewed their support to include the 2010/2011 season, allowing families to borrow a pass and experience Toronto's cultural treasures for free all with their Toronto Public Library card.

TD Bank Financial Group

In 2009 TD Bank Financial Group generously renewed their support of the TD Summer Reading Club for another three years. Since 1996, this summer program has become one of the cornerstones of children's services at Toronto Public Library. It promotes and encourages reading and literacy to school age children, helping over 250,000 children in Toronto and across Canada each year to learn and succeed.

TD Bank Financial Group's commitment to children's reading and literacy also extends to their support of the Kindergarten Outreach program. With their support, Toronto's Library reaches out to children entering school, and gives them the opportunity to explore the library and all it has to offer. These children are thrilled at the chance to sign up for their very first library card, and discover a world of learning and the joy of reading.

Toronto Star

The Toronto Star has been a strong supporter of Toronto Public Library over the past decade through its promotion of a variety of Library programs. In 2009, Toronto Star renewed its support of Keep Toronto Reading Month, TD Summer Reading Club, The Book Lover's Ball and Toronto Book Awards. This exceptional partnership has raised significant awareness, and has also resulted in increased participation and support of these programs and events within the city.

Friends of the Osborne and Lillian H. Smith Collections

This group is considered the oldest library friends group in Canada. Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra, first cousin to Queen Elizabeth II, is the Royal Patron. With five hundred members worldwide, and a distinguished British branch, the Children's Books History Society, this group has served to promote and support the Osborne Collection of Early Children's Books through many eventful years. Its accomplishments include building an Acquisition Trust Fund, providing support for Cataloguing, Conservation and Outreach projects, and supporting Toronto Public Library in raising awareness of this unique research collection. In 2009, the Friends continued their tradition of support by helping the Acquisition Trust Fund to reach new heights.

Friends of Toronto Public Library, North and South Chapters

The Friends of Toronto Public Library, North and South Chapters continue to be generous supporters of the library. Each year, over 100 volunteers dedicate 11,500 hours of service in support of raising funds, through the operation of two used book stores - Book Ends and Book Ends South, for various programs at Toronto Public Library.

In 2009, the Friends of Toronto Public Library, North Chapter were able to donate $55,000 to the Toronto Public Library Foundation in support of the library’s Leading to Reading program.

The Friends of Toronto Public Library, South Chapter were able to donate $58,000 in support of a variety of library programs. In 2009, the projects they supported included Outreach Story Time, English Can Be Fun and funds for programming at the Toronto Reference Library.

To date, the Friends of Toronto Public Library have jointly raised over $1 million in support of Toronto Public Library programs.

TD Friends of the Environment

A loyal supporter of the Foundation, the TD Friends of the Environment have donated over $115,000 over the past decade. In 2009, the TD Friends of the Environment, Scarborough/East York Chapter and the Etobicoke Chapter helped the Library add much needed collections on the environment to its shelves.

The Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Foundation

The support of The Catherine and Maxwell Meighen Foundation has had a profound impact on Toronto Public Library's Mobile Library Services. Over the past 13 years, the Meighen Foundation has provided over $400,000 to this service. Their support has helped place new Bookmobiles and Home Library Service vans on the road and has ensured that Mobile Library Service users enjoy a broad selection of materials.

George Cedric Metcalf Charitable Foundation

In 2009, the George Cedric Metcalf Foundation made several generous gifts to support the growth and development of the Toronto Public Library Foundation. Their gift empowered the Foundation to successfully promote the importance of Toronto's Library to the success and vibrancy of the city. With this gift, the Library Foundation has been able to grow its support of the expansion and enhancement of Library collections, programs, services and community spaces.

The Norman and Marian Robertson Charitable Foundation

The Norman and Marian Robertson Charitable Foundation gave a generous gift to provide special conservation support for the Osborne Collection of Early Children's Books. This support will enable the library to acquire additional conservation materials and equipment to care for its rare and fragile materials, and especially for the large, valuable archival gifts the library has been given in 2009. Our materials will become accessible much more quickly than would otherwise be possible, thanks to the generosity of the Norman and Marian Robertson Foundation.

Major gifts - Individual

Anonymous

At the end of 2008, the Foundation received a pledge for its first ever $1 million gift from an individual donor. This gift was received in 2009 and during the year, the Library was able to use this gift to enhance collections and services through the purchase of accreditation, skills training and multilingual materials for newcomers, as well as support for the early children's literacy program, Ready for Reading. This gift has helped and will continue to help the Library impact more lives throughout Toronto.

Anonymous

In 2009, the Foundation received a generous gift from an anonymous donor to help support the library's Storytime Outreach program. The Storytime Outreach program moves the Library out into the community and introduces our most vulnerable children to the joys of reading while at the same time educating parents and caregivers on the value of reading to their children during their early years. This donation was a wonderful gift that allowed this important program to flourish during the 2009/2010 year.

Anonymous

The Foundation continued to receive an annual generous gift of $10,000 from a donor who wished to remain anonymous. This donor values the Library's vital role within the city. This gift will continue to support the Library's greatest funding priorities.

Estate of Catherine Lomas

In 2009, the Toronto Public Library Foundation gratefully received a bequest from the Estate of Catherine Lomas. Catherine Lomas was a long-time customer of the Library’s Home Library Service program, a program that delivers library materials to those who are homebound due to age, illness or disability. She greatly valued the service and left the program $10,000 in her estate to enhance the talking book collection.

The Norman and Marian Robertson Charitable Foundation gave a generous gift to provide special conservation support for the Osborne Collection of Early Children’s Books.

F.C. Lawrence Muller and Scholastic Canada

The Foundation received an endowment from the F.C. Lawrence Muller and Scholastic Canada trust in early 2009 to establish a Canadian Children's Literature Festival. The festival will be an annual or biennial festival that will celebrate the magic of Canadian children's literature for children, their families, teachers and all those who delight in creative endeavours. The Canadian Children's Literature Festival will promote reading while celebrating the accomplishments of the many talented Canadians who create materials for children.

Gordon Hinch in Memory of Pauline Hinch

In 2009, Gordon Hinch established the Pauline Hinch Memorial Award for Staff Development in memory of his late wife, a former manager at the North York Central Library. Pauline had a passion for public librarianship and a strong desire to nurture an affection for libraries and their users among her colleagues. As such, the Pauline Hinch Memorial Award for Staff Development, supported by the Pauline Hinch Endowment Fund, will provide an annual or biennial award to a staff member working towards a degree in public librarianship and who demonstrates a strong commitment to the field.

Janet & Bruce McKelvey

Janet and Bruce McKelvey continued their support of the Toronto Public Library Foundation in 2009. As Chair of the Toronto Public Library Foundation Board, Janet McKelvey has been a tireless leader in her efforts to raise awareness of and funds for the work of the Foundation. As well, Janet and Bruce McKelvey’s significant personal gifts to both the annual campaign and to re:vitalize, the Foundation's first broad-based capital campaign were very much appreciated.

Judith Wilder

Judith's devotion to making art and music accessible to all has made her a benefactor to the Canadian cultural scene, and to Toronto in particular. A long-time member of the Friends of the Osborne and Lillian H. Smith Collections, philanthropist Judith Wilder has generously supported important projects at Osborne, including the acquisition and conservation of fine children’s book art. Judith made some splendid acquisitions possible in 2009, to be enjoyed by visitors of every age.

Richard and Joan Boxer

Richard and Joan continue to be key supporters of the Foundation. In his role as vice-chair on the Foundation Board, Richard Boxer has been instrumental in securing support for the Toronto Public Library beyond continuing his own financial commitment. Richard Boxer has also been a key driver of re:vitalize, the Foundation's first broad-based capital campaign in Toronto Public Library's 125-year history, helping to recreate the Toronto Reference Library as Toronto's foremost public centre for life-long learning, the exchange of ideas and community engagement. Richard and Joan's early leadership gift to the campaign has been significant to its success.
