Volunteering
The Adult Literacy program at Toronto Public Library provides:
- Free, one-on-one tutoring in basic reading, writing and math to english-speaking adults, 16 years or older
- Volunteer tutors work with the learners to help them reach their literacy goals
- Learners and volunteer tutors meet for a minimum of 2 hours per week
- At ten literacy offices in libraries across Toronto
What the Volunteer Does
Volunteers are paired with a learner and are provided with a training package based on the learner's goals. The training package is used to plan lessons and deliver tutoring.
Volunteers receive training on how to be an effective tutor.
Volunteer Benefits
After six months, overdue library fines are exempt for volunteers and a full reference can be provided.
