How can I use the material at Toronto Reference Library?

Most items at Toronto Reference Library cannot be taken from the building.
Some collections that do circulate are:

Best Bets
ESL Materials
Picture Collection
Some Multilingual Collections
Many Music Scores
Videos

You can use all other items in the library. If the catalogue says the item is on the "Open Shelf", you may find it yourself using the call number.

If the catalogue says the location is "TRL Stacks", the item is shelved in closed stacks and must be requested using a library card. If you do not qualify for a library card, you may apply for an In-Library Access card.

You may place a stacks request using the online catalogue in any library or from home. You must ask in person at the Periodicals Information desk for earlier issues of periodicals.

It takes up to 30 minutes to deliver the item to the Stacks Retrieval Pickup Shelves you selected. If we cannot locate the item, you will find a message on the bulletin board at the pickup shelves. The item will stay on the pickup shelves, for use in library, until day’s closing. If you need to use it the next day, you may ask any Information Desk staff to hold it for you for 24 hours.
